Google Mayday algorithm update in May 2010

Algorithm change applied in the first week of May. We came to know about this by a Matt Cutts video which starts with the question "Many are talking about losses of traffic with long tail queries which have 3 or more words in search phrase". Somebody asked him about this. Also they wanted to know from Matt Cutts what's going on Google algorithm, what is the update they are making?

According to Matt Cutts Google algorithm changes more than 400 times every year to increase quality.

In 2010, specially in May 2010, many webmasters faced significant drop in their Google ranking and drop in traffic also. This was mostly seen for long tail queries. But my assumption is Google is going to implement this system for all of their search phrases, not only for LONG TAIL QUERY.

Its an algorithm change. To improve the quality they changed the algorithm.

They wanted to provide better ranks for the quality sites, which sites matches with the query. The algorithm change is for - how we(Google) will assess which site(s) is the best match for LONG TAIL QUERIES.

So if you face downfall of ranks by Mayday update (3rd May 2010) of Google algorithm, then add good content so that the people thinks that your site is an authority site, get links from the highest quality sites.

Mayday mostly affects long tail search phrases, its impact is most vivid on search terms made up of 3 or more words search phrases.
