Now your target is to obtain a high search engine ranking in GOOGLE or YAHOO Search Engine Result Pages ( SERP). This tutorial is about the most fundamental or basic techniques of search engine optimization and you should check after reading this article that - you have followed the basic rules of Search Engine Optimization to score a High Rank specially in GOOGLE or YAHOO! .

It is assumed that the reader have a clear idea of web page design techniques. I don't expect that the reader is a web-master but should have clear knowledge of web-page design techniques. The following articles are mostly about web page design and if you don't know the basic of HTML / DHTML / Web design tags, then you may not understand it.

Inbound links or back Links:-

The links which are pointing to your site are called INBOUND LINKS or BACK LINKS of your site. Back links have huge impact in SEO. Google YAHOO calculates the number of back links and check the ANCHOR TEXT on Back Links. Then they also consider the quality of sites on which these back links are placed. How you should know which sites are quality sites ? This is by Google PageRank or PR. You shall know about Google PageRank or PR value in details later.

Link text or Anchor text on the inbound links or back Links:-

The link text is the text displayed in a hyperlink which refers a webpage. The target webpage's main search term should be included in the link text. Try to include target page's main search terms in this text. <a href="/www.anysite.com">link text</a>. Sometimes link text is also called anchor text.

Learn more on Back Links or Inbound Links

As for example <a href="/www.anysite.com/credit.html">Credit card information</a> should be the link in a website which points a target web page about credit card information in the same site or a different site. You must not use any weblink of this type: <a href="/www.anysite.com/credit.html" >Click here</a>

Google gives the link text most importance to rank higher in google. Avoid CLICK HERE type link shown above, in your web-page and write down the target page's topic in the place of CLICK HERE. Links carry more weight than the text around them. This is very important for the target page to obtain a higher ranking.

Title tag :-

<title>title of web page must be relevant to the subject of the webpage</title> This is also an important element for good rankings. Make sure that the webpage's keywords or main search terms are contained in this tag. Current Search Engines give more weight to the TITLE of a webpage.

The META Description tag :-

The META descriptions tag :-

Write a good short description for your webpage and incorporate the page's search term into it at least once or twice.
<meta name="description" content="web page topic description">

The META Keywords tag :-
<meta name="keywords" content="some keywords"> There is no need to separate keywords and key phrases with commas, because search engines ignore commas. Modern search engines treat keywords tag as plain text and they don't give it any extra importance.

My suggestion is you use META KEYWORDS and DESCRIPTIONS tag in Webpages, I am sure, now also Google and YAHOO selects the META TAGS to check relevancy of site on search terms found in Bold Text, H1 tag and title.

H tags, <h1>,<h2>,<h3>,<h4> etc TAGs :-

<H1>headline word</H1> Largest heading size =1. H tags are given more weight than ordinary text and, the larger the H size, the more weight it receives. So text inside of <H1> tag is of more weight than inside of <H2> tag.

Suggestion : Keep your main keywords and Search Terms in <H1> tags

Bold text, Italics, Underlined Text :-

Bold text is given more weight than ordinary text but not as much as H tags. Also bold text, underlined text. text in italics is given more weightage.

Text :- Use the search term in the page but not destroying the page's readability. Make sure that you use the term at least once very early in the page's body text. Make small parts, and even add sentences, to make sure that the search term is well represented in the text.

ALT text :-

<img src="/picture.jpg" alt="some text"> Include the search term in the alt text of all images on the page. Some systems -Braille readers / speech synthesizers use the alt text, so you might include the search term in it.
